Privacy Policy

Last Updated: August 27, 2026

The Texas Orphaned Wells website (“the Site”) is a public information resource developed, hosted, and operated by Purvis Energy Advisors (“we,” “us,” or “our”); Commission Shift and Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) contributed to the development of the Site. The Site aggregates publicly available Railroad Commission of Texas (RRC) data on orphaned, inactive, and producing oil and gas wells for landowners, regulators, journalists, and the public. This Privacy Policy explains how and why we access, collect, store, use, and share (“process”) your personal information when you visit the Site or otherwise engage with us.

By using the Site, you agree to the collection and use of information as described in this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree with our practices, please do not use the Site. 1. Information We Collect:

We only collect data that helps us achieve the purpose set out by this Privacy Policy. We will not collect any additional data beyond the data listed below without notifying users first.

  • Information you provide directly. When you use the Contact Us form, we collect the information you submit, which may include your name, email address, organization or affiliation, and the nature of your inquiry or requested data (e.g., county, well status, or other dashboard filters). We use this information solely to respond to you or fulfill your data request, and to allow Commission Shift and EDF and their affiliates to notify you about special programs, offers, and services that they believe will be of interest to you, as described in this Privacy Policy.

  • Information collected automatically. Like most websites, the Site automatically collects certain technical information when you visit, including your IP address, approximate location, links clicked, content viewed, browser and device type, and referring URL. We collect this through Squarespace’s built-in analytics and through Google Analytics, both of which use cookies or similar tracking technologies. See Section 5 for more on cookies.

  • Information from the embedded dashboard. The Site includes an embedded Power BI dashboard (via Microsoft’s “Publish to web” feature). When you view or interact with the dashboard, Microsoft may collect standard technical information (such as IP address and browser type) as part of hosting that embed. This collection is governed by Microsoft’s own privacy practices, not this Privacy Policy.

We only collect the data described in this Privacy Policy and will not knowingly collect additional categories of personal data — such as Social Security numbers or financial account information — without updating this Privacy Policy first.

2. How We Use Information:

Data processed on our Site will only be used for the purposes specified below or indicated on the relevant pages of our Site. We will not use your data beyond what we disclose in this Privacy Policy.

We use the information described above to:

  • Operate, maintain, and improve the Site and the underlying dashboard.

  • Respond to inquiries submitted through the Contact Us form, including preparing and emailing filtered well data for data requests.

  • Identify usage trends and understand how the Site is used so we can implement improvements.

  • Determine the effectiveness of our marketing and promotional campaigns, so we can better understand how to reach landowners and the public with relevant outreach.

  • Allow Commission Shift and EDF and their affiliates to notify you about special programs, offers, and services that they believe will be of interest to you.

  • Comply with legal obligations and protect the rights, safety, and security of the Site and its users.

We do not sell personal information to third parties.

3. How We Share Information:

We share information as needed to members of our organization and the following affiliated partners to operate the Site, respond to your requests, and allow Commission Shift and EDF and their affiliates to notify you about special programs, offers, and services that they believe will be of interest to you.

  • Purvis Energy Advisors hosts and operates the Site, and, with Commission Shift, processes Contact Us and data request submissions

  • Commission Shift and EDF, which, along with their affiliates, may notify you about special programs, offers, and services that they believe will be of interest to you

  • Monument Advocacy, which supports website management and may access form submissions for site administration and related advocacy outreach

  • Service providers that host or operate the Site’s underlying technology, including Squarespace (website hosting) and Microsoft Power BI (dashboard hosting)

  • Legal or regulatory authorities, if required by law, for legal proceedings, or to protect our legal rights

  • A successor organization, in the event of a transfer of the Site

We do not sell or share your data with any other third parties. If you follow a link from our Site to another site, we are not responsible for that site’s privacy policies and practices.

4. How Long We Store Personal Data:

We keep user information for as long as it is necessary for the purposes described in this Privacy Policy, unless a longer retention period is required or permitted by law (such as tax, accounting, or other legal requirements).

When we have no ongoing, legitimate business need to process user information, we will either delete or anonymize such information, or, if this is not possible, then we will securely store user data and isolate it from any further processing until deletion is possible. Aggregated analytics data is retained per Squarespace’s and Google Analytics’ standard retention periods. RRC well data displayed on the Site is public regulatory data, not personal information.

5. Cookies and Analytics

The Site uses cookies and similar technologies through Squarespace’s built-in analytics and Google Analytics to understand aggregate visitor traffic and usage patterns, but not to track visitors when they leave the Site. You can control cookies through your browser settings, and Google Analytics offers an opt-out browser add-on. Disabling cookies may affect some Site functionality but will not prevent you from viewing the Site’s content.

6. How We Protect Your Data:We have implemented reasonable technical and organizational security measures designed to protect the security of any user data we process; this includes using the strongest available browser encryption and storing all data on servers in secure facilities. All data is only accessible to our employees or affiliated partners, who are bound by strict confidentiality agreements, in which a breach of such agreement would result in the employee’s termination and potential legal action.

However, despite our safeguards and efforts to secure user data, 100% security can never be guaranteed against cybercriminals or unauthorized third parties. Please note that you use our Site at your own risk, and you should only access the Site within a secure environment.

7. Data Collection from Minors:

We do not knowingly collect, solicit data from, or market to children under the age of 13 years of age, nor do we knowingly sell such user data. By accessing the Site, you represent that you are at least 13 years of age or that you are the parent or guardian of such minor and consent to your dependent’s access to the Site. If we learn that we have collected data from someone under 13 years of age, we will take reasonable steps to promptly delete it from our records.

8. How to Access, Modify, or Delete the Data Collected:

It is your privacy right to withdraw your consent for us to collect and store your user data at any time. If you wish to withdraw your consent, contact us at info@texasorphanedwells.org.

However, please note that this will not affect the lawfulness of our data processing before its withdrawal nor, when applicable law allows, will it affect the processing of our user data conducted in reliance on lawful processing grounds other than consent.

9. Modifications:

This Privacy Policy may be amended from time to time in order to maintain compliance with the law and to reflect changes to our data collection process. When we amend this Privacy Policy, we will update the “Effective Date” at the top of the Privacy Policy. We recommend that users periodically review our Privacy Policy to ensure that they are notified of any updates. If necessary, we may notify users by email of changes to this Privacy Policy.

10. Contact Information:

If you have any questions, concerns, or complaints about this Privacy Policy, or wish to exercise a privacy right described above, contact us at  info@texasorphanedwells.org.
